your modem is most likely using com 1 or 3. i think you are on the right track, see if you can get it to use com2 which should be available.

Com 1 should be the 9 pin serial port. If it is being used you can add a serial port via PCI card.
I added a serial port that way for my work computer because I need a com port for the battery backup and one for my CNC milling machine.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong
